Sistemi za upravljanje vsebin (CMS- Content management systems) so aplikacije, ki omogočajo postavitev dinamičnega spletnega mesta, tako enostavnega kot kompleksnega. Danes so dosegljivi mnogi, predvsem brezplačni sistemi, katerih cilji so si podobni. Večina temelji na odprtokodni osnovi (spletni strežnik Apache, podatkovna baza MySQL in podpora skriptnem programskem jeziku PHP).

Sistem je sestavljen iz osnove (ospredje in skrbništvo), komponent, modulov in predlog. V celoti je poslovenjen, dostopna pa bodo tudi pisna gradiva in video vodiči. Uporablja se za izgradnjo spletnega mesta za različne namene - od osebne spletne strani do kompleksnega spletišča oz. spletnega portala. Zgrajen je modularno, kar pomeni, da lahko s pomočjo dodatnih komponent in modulov v sistem vnesemo nove funkcionalnosti.

Glavna odlika CM sistema je v tem, da lahko uporabnik s pomočjo spletnega brskalnika enostavno vnaša in vzdržuje različne vsebine na spletnem mestu. Pri tem mu sistem ponuja obrazce in "čarovnike", s pomočjo katerih lahko upravlja spletne strani, povezave, članke v različnih formatih, avdio in video vsebine in slike. Administracija sistema oziroma upravljanje njegovega določenega dela je omogočena na nivoju pravic in dovoljenj, ki jih posamezen uporabnik ima.

Naloga avtorja vsebine je tako le priprava, medtem ko sam sistem poskrbi za pravilen prikaz na spletišču. Ospredje temelji na sistemu predlog in s tem omogoča hitro in enostavno zamenjavo videza spletišča. Mnoge predloge so prosto dostopne na spletu, z znanjem programskega jezika HTML in stilnih predlog CSS pa je mogoče izdelati predlogo po svojih željah.

Joomla! is a free, open source content management system for publishing content on the world wide web and intranets. The system includes features such as page caching to improve performance, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, website searching, and language internationalization. Joomla is licensed under the GPL, and is the result of a fork of Mambo.

It is written with the PHP programming language and uses the MySQL database by default.

Slojoomla is a slovenian localization project for Joomla! and its extensions based on original Joomla code.
